Distinctions
Mike Guardabascio at PulpFictionOnline has dubbed Greg Pak and Ed Brubaker as the year's best mainstream comic book writers. Here's the blurb about Pak: No question about it, nobody turned in more solid performances than these two guys this year, in mainstream books at least. Greg Pak changed the tenor of big events with his universe-spanning Planet Hulk epic, followed by the spectacular World War Hulk, which was marketed as its own event but which reads much better as a sequel to PH. Pak did an event with characters true to their cores (unlike Civil War), that improved a major character without retconning or changing him too much. Pak's Hulk is spectacular, and not to be missed. In his "2007 in Review" column at ComicCritique, Adam McGovern has named Greg Pak the Writer of the Year -- and has some very nice things to say about "Hulk" and "Hercules" editor Mark Paniccia. Here's the blurb:
Pak was the one in 2007 to pick up the Grant Morrison banner and prove that crossovers can be art. In the main World War Hulk mini the relentless momentum of Pak’s narrative and the punishing physicality of John Romita Jr.’s bravura visuals conveyed anxieties run amok and real-life war-weariness raised to a hysterical pitch. Pak’s regular Incredible Hulk book was an even more fascinating narrative of the War’s underground factions and captive bystanders, conveying the human cost and psychic shockwaves of conflicts real and fantastic like few other comics of our war-torn decade. The other “fronts” in tie-in titles were almost all as interesting — especially the deranged displaced-persons/profiteer melodrama in Zeb Wells’ Heroes for Hire — and the ramifying followup books shaded the narrative across the genre spectrum, from the sober and humane postwar elegy of Pak’s Aftersmash one-shot to the inventive suspense and moral ambiguity of his lost-platoon Warbound mini to the offbeat insurrection comedy (!) of the Incredible Herc ongoing (!!), an on-the-road (and on-the-run) adventure with Hercules and Amadeus Cho alone against SHIELD in a battle where what’s most at risk is heroism itself (this last one a real-life dream-teamup between Pak and rising auteur Fred Van Lente as co-writer). Every precinct of what I think of as the Paniccia Comics Group — that most original and oddball corner of Marvel’s overall cosmos, under editor Mark Paniccia’s wise dominion — gave its all for the kind of epic that will hopefully become a trend; call it event-garde. Greg Pak has been dubbed the Breakout Talent of 2007 in the 2nd Annual Golden Pants Awards bestowed by the reviewers of ComicsPants.com. Click here to see the full list and listen to the podcast.
The Comixtreme.com "2 in 1 Showcase" crew has named Greg Pak the "Next Big Thing" in their Best of 2007 episode. Click here to listen to the mp3 of the show -- the "Next Big Thing" category is discussed about two thirds of the way through.
Meanwhile, in his "Everything but Imaginary" column, Blake Petit of Comixtreme has named "Incredible Hercules" #113, written by Pak and Fred Van Lente, as his "Favorite of the Week." Click here to read the column.
Greg Pak's "Planet Hulk" epic makes Randy Myer's Best of 2007 graphic novels list for the Oakland Tribune. An excerpt: ... this adventure with the big, mean green one so engrossed me that I turned into a hermit one weekend to read it. Pak blasts the Hulk to a bloodthirsty planet caught up in a brutal caste system. This is epic, grand story-telling, on par with "Gladiator" and "Lord of the Rings." A book that never lags, never disappoints. Click here for the full article.
The Thursday Morning Quarterback Crew at WizardUniverse.com mentions Greg Pak in the "Best Writer" section of their Best of 2007 column. An excerpt: I came late to the Pak party in Hulk, but every month of this year, he’s delivered something I never thought possible—he made me care about the Hulk.... I got a completely fresh take on a character I used to avoid, and I got a solid year’s worth of entertaining, nail-biting stories that kept me coming back each month. That’s all you can ask for.
...
I think that whole little corner of the Marvel U, all the post-World War Hulk spinoffs and storylines, are some of the most exciting comics Marvel’s putting out right now. That’s definitely something worth watching for in 2008. Click here to read the whole column.
The boys of the comic book talk show "The Stack" have released their Best of 2007 list, which includes "World War Hulk," written by Greg Pak with pencils by John Romita, Jr. Click here to view the video.
Wizard Magazine has come out with its "Best of 2007" list, and Greg Pak and the Hulk are big winners. The "Incredible Hulk" comic book, written by Pak, has been named "Best Ongoing Series." And Pak's been named "Breakout Talent." Here's an excerpt: "Planet Hulk" turned the big green behemoth from a ragin monster into a deeply complex and psychologically driven character. And with "World War Hulk," Pak proved his ability to deliver complex, heartfelt storytelling and intense scenes of action on the grand stage of company-wide crossovers. The full article can be found in "Wizard" #195, on sale today in comic book stores everywhere.
